Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez drops blistering warning on 'political albatross' Trump is facing

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) argued this week that the rising cost of living has become a genuine crisis for ordinary Americans — and a serious political liability for President Donald Trump heading into the November midterms.

Her comments were highlighted by CBS News correspondent Scott MacFarlane, who framed the affordability crunch as "a political albatross for Team Trump" that "endangers GOP majorities in November." MacFarlane shared video of Ocasio-Cortez explaining why she believes the problem is so severe for the administration.

In the clip, Ocasio-Cortez described a squeeze that goes well beyond trimming household budgets at the margins.

"This isn't just going to the grocery store and buying the generic cereal, and switching over," she said. "How do you actually accommodate when you can't afford medicine, when you can't afford your housing."

She emphasized the breadth of the strain, calling it "a crisis for so many people" and "a crisis for everyday middle class people."

Asked whether Trump is taking the problem seriously, Ocasio-Cortez argued that the president is actively making the situation worse rather than addressing it.

"They are entering into sweetheart deal after sweetheart deal," she said.

The remarks tie the affordability issue directly to the administration's economic record, an area Democrats increasingly see as a vulnerability for Republicans. With grocery, housing, and medical costs weighing on household budgets, the cost of living is shaping up as a central battleground ahead of the midterm elections — one Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats appear eager to keep front and center.
