The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced Drunix, a new open-source, enterprise-grade blockchain platform designed to support organizations in developing and scaling tokenization platforms, digital asset ecosystems, and multi-organization blockchain networks. The platform has been developed as an advanced fork of Hyperledger Fabric and is intended to address the growing demand for scalable and secure distributed ledger solutions.

Drunix has been engineered to meet the requirements of enterprise and public infrastructure deployments, enabling organizations to implement blockchain technology at scale while preserving privacy, governance standards, and interoperability. Although the platform remains compatible with existing Hyperledger Fabric environments, it incorporates several architectural improvements intended to enhance transaction throughput, scalability, and overall operational performance.

Built on Extensive Blockchain Research

The launch of Drunix reflects NPCI’s ongoing efforts in blockchain and tokenization research. The organization stated that the platform emerged from years of experimentation and development in distributed ledger technologies. Through this initiative, NPCI seeks to provide reusable technology components that can help accelerate blockchain adoption across multiple industries and use cases.

Drunix has been designed to help enterprises build and scale tokenization platforms, digital asset ecosystems, and collaborative blockchain networks while maintaining high levels of privacy, governance, and interoperability.

NPCI has consistently contributed to India’s digital infrastructure through open-source technology projects. Previous initiatives such as FiMi, Vigil-AI, and Falcon were launched with the objective of strengthening technological capabilities and promoting innovation. Drunix represents the organization’s second major open-source contribution in the blockchain and tokenization sector.

Expanding Beyond Falcon’s Foundation

The platform follows the introduction of Falcon, NPCI’s earlier open-source project focused on production-grade blockchain network management and orchestration. While Falcon primarily addressed network administration and operational management, Drunix extends the organization’s blockchain strategy by focusing on the underlying runtime and transaction-processing layers.

The new platform introduces significant architectural enhancements over traditional Hyperledger Fabric deployments, improving scalability, transaction throughput, and operational efficiency for enterprise applications.

According to NPCI Chief Technology Officer Vishal Kanvaty, the rapid evolution of digital ecosystems requires infrastructure that can support innovation through open-source collaboration and future-ready technology frameworks. He indicated that NPCI intends for Drunix to strengthen blockchain readiness by providing foundational technologies that encourage experimentation, interoperability, and practical implementation across industries.

Kanvaty further conveyed that the initiative demonstrates NPCI’s commitment to reinforcing India’s digital infrastructure while also contributing to the advancement of the global open-source technology community. He suggested that making such foundational technologies openly available can help organizations accelerate development efforts and explore new blockchain-based business models more efficiently.

Strengthening India’s Digital Infrastructure

The release of Drunix underscores NPCI’s broader strategy of enabling innovation through foundational digital technologies. By providing enterprises and developers with an open-source blockchain platform optimized for large-scale deployment, NPCI aims to lower barriers to adoption and support the continued growth of distributed ledger technology applications.

With Drunix, NPCI is extending its open-source blockchain efforts beyond network management to the core transaction-processing layer, creating a foundation for large-scale enterprise and public-sector blockchain adoption.

The launch further reinforces NPCI’s role as a key contributor to India’s digital transformation, supporting the development of efficient, scalable, and interoperable technologies that can drive innovation across sectors while strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure ecosystem.
