The Kota Kinabalu sessions court ordered the undocumented migrant to receive rehabilitative counselling while in jail.
PETALING JAYA: The Kota Kinabalu sessions court today sentenced a 40-year-old man to 10 years in jail and ordered him to be given three strokes of the rotan for sexually assaulting a minor.
Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan passed the sentence after Saliman Sukarno, an undocumented migrant, changed his plea to guilty under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 when the case came up for cross-examination, the Borneo Post reported.
Amir Shah also ordered Saliman, who is unemployed, to be referred to the immigration department after serving his jail term as he has no valid travel documents.
He was also ordered to undergo rehabilitative counselling while in jail.
Saliman was charged with sexually assaulting the 14-year-old victim at a rented room in Kampung Likas. The offence was committed on Feb 2, 2025.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Shafeerah Mad Iskim appeared for the prosecution, while Saliman was unrepresented.
