D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) announced it has been selected to receive a $1,566,250 grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) through the National Quantum Virtual Laboratory (NQVL) program. The funding will support D-Wave’s role as a key industry partner in the ERASE (Erasure Qubits and Dynamic Circuits for Quantum Advantage) project, which aims to develop foundational technologies for fault-tolerant quantum computing and bolster U.S. leadership in quantum innovation.

The ERASE project, led by Yale University, brings together researchers from leading academic institutions and industry organizations to advance dual-rail gate-model quantum computing hardware, software, error correction, and applications. D-Wave, through its New Haven, Connecticut-based subsidiary Quantum Circuits, LLC, will provide ERASE researchers with access to its superconducting dual-rail gate-model quantum computing resources. The award moves ERASE into the second phase of the NQVL program, underscoring the NSF’s continued support for the project’s approach to scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Dr. Alan Baratz, CEO of D-Wave, said in a statement, ‘NSF’s continued support for the ERASE project highlights the national importance of accelerating progress toward scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computing. We believe that D-Wave’s dual-rail technology can play a meaningful role in that effort, while building the technical foundation and skilled workforce needed to sustain U.S. leadership in quantum computing.’

This grant is significant as it represents a strategic investment in quantum computing infrastructure by the U.S. government. The NQVL program is designed to accelerate the development of quantum technologies by providing resources and fostering collaborations between academia and industry. The ERASE project’s focus on fault-tolerant quantum computing is critical, as error correction is one of the biggest challenges facing the field. Achieving fault tolerance is widely seen as a necessary step toward building practical, large-scale quantum computers that can solve problems beyond the reach of classical computers.

D-Wave is uniquely positioned as the only dual-platform quantum computing company, offering both annealing and gate-model systems. The company’s dual-rail technology, which uses two physical qubits to encode one logical qubit, is designed to reduce errors and improve the reliability of quantum computations. By granting ERASE researchers access to its resources, D-Wave is contributing to the development of a skilled workforce and advancing the technical foundation needed for the quantum computing industry.

More than 100 organizations across commercial, government, and research sectors trust D-Wave to address complex computational challenges using quantum computing. The implications of this announcement extend beyond D-Wave. It signals the U.S. government’s commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in quantum technology, which is increasingly seen as vital for national security and economic competitiveness. By funding projects like ERASE, the NSF is helping to ensure that the United States remains at the forefront of quantum innovation, potentially leading to breakthroughs in fields such as cryptography, materials science, and drug discovery.
