THE Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has transferred 600 inmates from Metro Manila facilities to the Davao Prison and Penal Farm as part of its continuing effort to decongest the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) and prepare for its eventual closure.
In a statement on Wednesday, BuCor said 500 male inmates from the NBP in Muntinlupa City and 100 female inmates from the Correctional Institution for Women (CIW) were transferred on July 7.
BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang, Jr. said the transfer was carried out with the assistance of 150 personnel from the two correctional facilities to ensure the inmates’ safe and orderly movement. The female inmates will be housed at the CIW facility within the Davao Prison and Penal Farm.
The bureau said the transfer forms part of its continuing efforts to ease congestion at the NBP, which has long faced overcrowding, while advancing preparations for the prison’s eventual closure. — Mark Joseph M. Sanchez
