Week 3 of October 2026
Statistics period: October 14 – October 20, 2026
Data cutoff: October 20, 2026

Core Narrative

Over the past week, the crypto market remained weak and range-bound, weighed down by stronger-than-expected inflation data across the board and persistent ETF outflows. Bitcoin started the week near $83,000 before briefly falling toward $81,000 early in the week following the CPI release. It then consolidated in a narrow range around $82,000 amid elevated U.S. Treasury yields and fluctuating risk appetite. As of October 20, BTC was trading at approximately $81,400, with a weekly trading range of around $81,000–$83,000.

U.S. September Inflation Data Exceeded Expectations Across the Board, Putting the Rate-Cut Narrative to a Serious Test. September CPI, released on October 14, rose 0.6% month over month and 3.7% year over year, both at the upper end of market forecasts. Core CPI increased 2.5% year over year and 0.2% month over month. The following day's PPI release delivered an even bigger surprise: headline PPI surged 1.3% month over month, nearly triple the market forecast of 0.5% and marking the largest monthly increase since March 2022. On a yearly basis, PPI rose 6.3%, far exceeding expectations of 5.3%. Core PPI also surpassed forecasts, rising 0.7% month over month and 5.0% year over year. Energy prices were the primary driver, jumping 10.8% month over month, while gasoline prices soared 20.3%, accounting for more than 80% of the increase in goods prices.

ETF Outflows Persisted, With October Net Outflows Reaching $535 Million. For the week ended October 16, U.S. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $228 million in net outflows, although some estimates put the figure at $145 million. Cumulative net outflows for October reached approximately $535 million. October 7 saw the month's largest single-day outflow of $485 million. Notably, total ETF trading volume exceeded $7.5 billion for the week, with daily trading volume surpassing $2 billion on some days. High trading activity alongside relatively modest net outflows suggests routine portfolio rebalancing rather than a wholesale institutional exit.
U.S. Treasury yields and oil prices exerted dual pressure on the market. Following the release of inflation data, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield remained above 5.1%, with persistently elevated long-term rates continuing to weigh on risk asset valuations. Meanwhile, oil prices stayed high, and the risk of energy inflation feeding through to core prices has yet to subside. QCP Capital noted that if deleveraging in equity markets spills over into crypto, Bitcoin's $80,000 support level could face a test. Conversely, rising bond prices, declining real yields, and a weaker U.S. dollar could create favorable conditions for a rebound in risk assets.

Overall, the market remained weak this week under three major pressures: stronger-than-expected CPI and PPI readings, persistent ETF outflows, and elevated U.S. Treasury yields. Bitcoin managed to hold above $81,000, but upward momentum remained notably weak. Market attention has now shifted to the September PCE Price Index, scheduled for release on October 29, and the Federal Reserve's October 27–28 policy meeting.

I. Key Crypto Market Developments

1. Institutional Flows: ETFs See $228M in Weekly Net Outflows, but High Turnover Suggests Rebalancing Rather Than an Exit

In the second week of October, Spot Bitcoin ETFs continued to experience net outflows, although the scale of outflows narrowed compared with the previous week.

According to data from Farside Investors and AInvest, U.S. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $228 million in net outflows for the week ended October 16. This marked a slowdown from the $679 million in outflows recorded the previous week (October 5–9). Cumulative net outflows for October reached approximately $535 million, with the $485 million single-day outflow on October 7 accounting for the vast majority of the month's total.
However, trading activity remained robust. Total ETF trading volume exceeded $7.5 billion for the week, reaching $3.18 billion on October 8 and $2.29 billion on October 14. The $228 million in weekly net outflows represented just 0.2% of the ETFs' approximately $104.3 billion in total assets under management. This relatively small proportion suggests routine portfolio rebalancing rather than a structural withdrawal by institutional investors.

Structural Signals: Since their launch in January 2024, U.S. Spot Bitcoin ETFs have accumulated approximately $56.8 billion in net inflows, while net outflows so far in 2026 amount to only around $315 million. Against this backdrop, a single week's outflows carry limited significance. What matters more is whether sustained outflows over several consecutive weeks begin to erode cumulative net inflows, which would signal a potential trend reversal.

2. Price Performance: BTC Consolidates Weakly Around $82,000 as $80,000 Becomes Key Psychological Support

From October 14 to 20, Bitcoin followed a pattern of a CPI-driven sell-off, stabilization at lower levels, and narrow-range consolidation.

October 14 (CPI Release Day): Bitcoin traded in a narrow range near $83,000 ahead of the data release. Following the announcement, BTC quickly fell below $83,000, briefly approaching $82,000. The market-implied probability of a December rate hike surged to nearly 95%, while the probability of an October rate hike rose to around 43%.

October 15–17: Stronger-than-expected PPI data added further pressure on Bitcoin, although it managed to hold above $81,000. Persistent ETF outflows continued to limit the potential for a rebound.

October 19–20: Bitcoin briefly rebounded above $83,000, but selling pressure resurfaced after the U.S. market opened, pushing the price back into the $81,000–$82,000 range. As of October 20, BTC was trading at approximately $81,400–$81,960, posting a slight decline over the past 24 hours.

Other major cryptocurrencies also faced broad-based pressure this week. Ethereum (ETH) fell to around $2,400 amid persistent ETF outflows, declining approximately 3% over the past seven days, with its on-chain average cost basis of $2,311 serving as a key support level. Solana (SOL) dropped below several key moving averages to trade near $104, weighed down primarily by a reversal in ETF flows. XRP showed relative resilience, trading around $1.33. Although it remained well below its cycle high, an unusual surge in XRP Ledger transaction volume suggested early signs of stabilization near the lows.

Technical Outlook: Bitcoin has found initial support near $81,000, but significant sell orders clustered above $83,000 have repeatedly capped rebound attempts. According to QCP Capital, $80,000 represents the next key psychological support level. If deleveraging in equity markets spills over into crypto, this support could come under pressure. Conversely, rising bond prices, declining real yields, and a weaker U.S. dollar could create favorable conditions for a rebound. The Fear and Greed Index recovered to 59 from lower levels, entering the "Greed" zone. This suggests an improvement in market sentiment, although a sustained trend reversal has yet to emerge.

3. Stablecoins: Total Market Cap Stalls at $301.4 Billion as Standard Chartered Pushes Back Its $2 Trillion Target to 2030

From October 14 to 20, the stablecoin market exhibited a structural trend characterized by stagnant supply and accelerating circulation.
According to DeFiLlama, as of October 20, the total stablecoin market capitalization stood at approximately $301.4 billion, down around 0.6% from $303.1 billion a year earlier and remaining largely flat over the past year. In a report published in mid-October, Standard Chartered noted that the stablecoin market capitalization was approximately $309 billion, with supply growth stagnating even as transaction activity continued to rise. Reflecting this shift from supply expansion toward greater circulation efficiency, Standard Chartered pushed back its forecast for the stablecoin market to reach $2 trillion by two years, to 2030.

USDT and USDC continued to dominate the market. According to DeFiLlama, USDT had a market capitalization of approximately $183.5 billion, accounting for around 60.9% of the stablecoin market, while USDC stood at approximately $72.8 billion, representing a share of around 24%. Together, the two stablecoins accounted for more than 84.7% of the market, indicating that market concentration remained high.
Structural Signals: Geoffrey Kendrick, Head of Digital Assets Research at Standard Chartered, noted that the stablecoin market has evolved into four major competitive segments: USDT dominates savings in emerging markets, USDC leads payments and AI agent transactions in developed markets, USDC and USDe are strengthening their positions in crypto trading, while USDG, M^0, and bank-led stablecoin networks are seeking to replace existing payment infrastructure in developed markets. The contrast between stagnant supply and growing usage suggests that the stablecoin market's growth drivers are shifting from supply expansion toward broader adoption across use cases and greater circulation efficiency.

II. Global Asset Performance

1. Equity Markets: Hotter-Than-Expected Inflation Hits Tech Stocks as Nasdaq Drops Over 4% for the Week

From October 14 to 20, U.S. stocks experienced sharp volatility, driven by stronger-than-expected inflation data across the board and mixed earnings results from technology companies. The Nasdaq Composite plunged nearly 2% following the CPI release before partially recovering on dip-buying and a rebound in semiconductor stocks. Nevertheless, the index still posted a significant weekly decline.

October 14 (CPI Release Day): September CPI rose 3.7% year over year, exceeding expectations and fueling concerns over further rate hikes. All three major indices closed lower. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.09% to 51,621.48, the S&P 500 fell 1.11% to 7,718.94, and the Nasdaq Composite plunged 1.88% to 26,692.87, marking its largest single-day decline in more than two months. The technology sector led losses, falling 2.62%, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index tumbled 4.3%. CoreWeave plunged more than 15%, while SK Hynix, Micron, and Sandisk each declined over 4%.
October 15 (PPI Release Day): Investors bought the dip, driving a broad-based rebound across all three major indices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.08% to 52,177.69, the S&P 500 gained 0.33% to 7,744.06, and the Nasdaq Composite edged up 0.08% to 26,713.03. However, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell another 0.88%, extending its losing streak.

October 16 (Friday): Technology stocks faced renewed selling pressure, with the Nasdaq Composite plunging 2.15% to 26,140.03, the S&P 500 falling 1.09% to 7,659.44, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declining 0.34% to 52,002.41. For the week, the Nasdaq dropped 4.5%, the S&P 500 lost 1.9%, while the Dow gained 0.7%. Large-cap technology stocks recorded their worst weekly performance since April 2025, while the VIX volatility index surged 21.45% on the day to close at 19.99.

October 19 (Monday): Semiconductor stocks led a market rebound, with the Nasdaq Composite rising 1.11% to 26,430.89 and the S&P 500 gaining 0.41% to 7,690.73, while the Dow edged down 0.07% to 51,966.03. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index advanced 1.61%, with memory chip stocks posting strong gains. Western Digital jumped 6.09%, Sandisk rose 5.53%, and SK Hynix gained 4.67%.
October 20 (Tuesday): Strong earnings results drove a sharp rally in the Dow. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.02% to close at 52,495.88, the S&P 500 gained 0.28% to 7,712.57, while the Nasdaq Composite edged down 0.02% to 26,424.82. 3M shares climbed 5.78% following better-than-expected earnings, although the technology sector remained under slight pressure.

Core Logic: The central tension in U.S. equities this week was the combination of persistent inflation and weakening confidence in the AI investment narrative. Both CPI and PPI exceeded expectations, fueling rate hike expectations and putting direct pressure on high-valuation technology stocks. Meanwhile, concerns over the sustainability of AI capital expenditure intensified. CoreWeave's 15% single-day plunge and consecutive declines in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index suggested that capital was rotating out of the AI computing infrastructure trade. Analysts at GAIN Capital noted that investors' focus on technology stocks is shifting from revenue growth to the alignment between capital expenditure and cash flow. The Dow's relative resilience reflected a rotation toward value stocks and defensive sectors as technology stocks came under pressure.

2. Commodities: Volatile Geopolitical Risk Premiums Send Oil Prices on a Roller Coaster as Gold and Silver Swing Sharply After the U.S. Jobs Report

From October 14 to 20, commodity markets showed a clear divergence, with oil outperforming gold. Crude oil prices were driven higher by escalating tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, pushing WTI back above $100 per barrel. Meanwhile, gold faced pressure from stronger-than-expected inflation data and fluctuating U.S. Treasury yields, while silver experienced even sharper volatility.

Crude Oil: Geopolitical risks dominated the market, pushing WTI back above $100 per barrel. Supply-side geopolitical risks were the primary drivers of oil prices this week. On October 14, WTI closed at $95.17 per barrel, while Brent settled at $106.06 per barrel. Oil prices then continued to rise, supported by a sharp decline of 8.6 million barrels in U.S. crude inventories, far exceeding expectations, and heightened geopolitical tensions. On October 16, WTI surged to $101.41 per barrel, while Brent closed at $109.86 per barrel, up 3.72%. On October 19, Yemen's Houthi forces launched attacks on Saudi oil facilities, pushing WTI further up to $103.66 per barrel, while Brent traded at $109.55 per barrel. On October 20, WTI Futures climbed back above $100 per barrel.
Gold: Sharp Volatility Following the CPI Release, With Prices Trending Lower Overall. On October 14, the day of the CPI release, international Spot gold prices fell 1.24% to close at $4,105.12 per ounce, briefly breaking below the $4,100 support level. On October 15, gold rebounded sharply by 1.59% to $4,170.25 per ounce as U.S. Treasury yields declined, while New York gold Futures gained more than 2%. On October 16, New York gold Futures edged up 0.35% to $4,184.85 per ounce, supported by a weaker U.S. dollar and lower Treasury yields. On October 19, New York gold Futures declined 0.50% to $4,160.30 per ounce, as persistent inflation and rate hike expectations dampened buying interest.

Silver: Sharp Volatility Followed by Stabilization After an Early-Week Plunge. On October 14, international Spot silver prices plunged 6.40% to $55.64 per ounce, significantly underperforming gold. Silver subsequently rebounded alongside gold, with London Spot silver closing at $56.975 per ounce on October 16. On October 19, silver edged up to $57.062 per ounce, gaining 0.15% on the day.

Core Logic: Commodity prices this week were shaped by the interplay between geopolitical risks and inflation expectations. In the oil market, escalating tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war posed direct threats to supply. Combined with a sharp decline in U.S. crude inventories, these factors pushed WTI back above $100 per barrel, reigniting concerns over energy inflation. In precious metals, stronger-than-expected CPI data initially weighed on gold prices, while a temporary decline in U.S. Treasury yields created an opportunity for a rebound. However, with markets continuing to price in a high probability of a December rate hike, the upside potential for gold and silver remained constrained. Silver experienced significantly greater volatility than gold due to its industrial exposure and the withdrawal of speculative capital.

3. Bond Market: Yields Retreat After Hitting 24-Year Highs as Rate Hike Expectations Ease

From October 14 to 20, the U.S. Treasury market moved in the opposite direction of what inflation data would typically suggest. Both September CPI and PPI exceeded expectations, which would normally push yields higher. However, the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield declined by approximately 15 basis points over the week, closing near 5.098%. The primary driver of this unusual divergence was a flight to safety triggered by the sell-off in AI-related stocks, prompting capital to flow back into U.S. Treasuries.

October 14 (CPI Release Day): September headline CPI rose 3.7% year over year, while core CPI increased 2.6%, both exceeding expectations. The 2-year U.S. Treasury yield briefly surged by more than 15 basis points intraday. However, yields subsequently retreated from their highs. By the close, the 2-year yield had risen just 0.64 basis points to 4.798%, while the 10-year yield fell 2.51 basis points to 5.188% and the 30-year yield declined 3.94 basis points to 5.522%. The decline in long-term yields despite the inflation surprise reflected strong buying demand for Treasuries.
October 15 (PPI Release Day): September PPI surged 6.3% year over year and 1.3% month over month, far exceeding expectations. However, U.S. Treasury yields plunged across the board, with the 20-year yield falling 14.6 basis points intraday, the 30-year yield dropping 14.1 basis points, and the 10-year yield declining 13.6 basis points. AI computing infrastructure company CoreWeave faced a simultaneous sell-off in its stock and bonds, with the pressure spreading to other AI companies. This fueled concerns over the sustainability of AI investment, triggering a rush into safe-haven U.S. Treasuries that outweighed the negative impact of the stronger-than-expected inflation data.

October 16–19: Treasury yields fluctuated at lower levels. On October 16, the 10-year yield closed at 5.073%. On October 19, yields rose across the board as technology stocks rebounded, safe-haven buying subsided, and oil prices climbed. The 10-year yield increased by 5.9 basis points to 5.14%.

Long-term supply pressures and inflation expectations keep yields at their highest levels since 2004
Core Logic: The central tension in the bond market this week was the tug-of-war between persistent inflation and weakening employment. The ISM Services Prices Index reached a four-year high, reinforcing expectations that interest rates would remain higher for longer. However, significantly weaker-than-expected nonfarm payrolls reduced the urgency of consecutive rate hikes. UBS noted in a research report that current market pricing implies nearly four additional Fed rate hikes by the end of next year, which it considers "overly aggressive." The three-month annualized rate of core PCE inflation stood at just 2.05% in August, its lowest level since July 2024, suggesting that the underlying inflation trend continues to improve. Market attention has shifted to the minutes of the Federal Reserve's September meeting, scheduled for release on October 8. If the minutes reveal a dovish faction within the committee, they could further validate the ongoing repricing of interest rate expectations.

III. In-Depth Analysis of Key Themes

Theme 1: CPI and PPI Both Surge Past Expectations — The Pass-Through of Energy Inflation May Be Just Beginning

The inflation data released on October 14–15 served as the key macroeconomic catalyst behind this week's market pressure.

Key Data: September CPI rose 0.6% month over month and 3.7% year over year, both exceeding market expectations. The following day's PPI release delivered an even bigger surprise: headline PPI surged 1.3% month over month (vs. 0.5% expected) and 6.3% year over year (vs. 5.4% expected), marking the largest monthly increase since March 2022. Core PPI rose 0.7% month over month and 5.0% year over year, with all four readings exceeding expectations. Energy prices were the primary driver, jumping 10.8% month over month and accounting for more than 80% of the increase in goods prices.

Why PPI Is More Concerning Than CPI: PPI measures price pressures upstream of CPI. Energy price shocks first affect businesses before gradually passing through transportation, warehousing, wholesale, and retail channels to consumers. In September, services prices within PPI rose 0.8% month over month, the largest increase since April this year, suggesting that energy-driven inflationary pressures are spreading into broader service prices.
Impact on Crypto Assets: The across-the-board PPI surprise suggests that markets may have underestimated the persistence of inflation. If this trend continues, the Federal Reserve's rate hike path could be steeper than currently priced in, with rising real interest rates continuing to weigh on valuations of non-yielding risk assets. Bitcoin's weak consolidation in the $81,000–$82,000 range directly reflects these macroeconomic pressures.

Theme 2: ETF Outflows and Diverging Institutional Views — Citi Raises Bitcoin Price Target to $113,000

This week, a significant divergence emerged between ETF flows and institutional outlooks.

ETF Flows: On October 14 alone, U.S. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $261 million in net outflows, while Spot Ethereum ETFs saw $130 million in net outflows, bringing the combined total to approximately $391 million. Fidelity's FBTC recorded $152.7 million in outflows, while BlackRock's IBIT saw $110.9 million. For the week ended October 16, Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded approximately $228 million in net outflows, bringing cumulative October outflows to around $535 million.
Yet Institutional Price Targets Are Rising. On September 30, Citi raised its 12-month Bitcoin price target from $82,000 to $113,000, implying an upside potential of approximately 35%. Citi's outlook is not based on short-term ETF flows but on the long-term trend of financial advisors and brokers gradually increasing their crypto allocations. The bank expects approximately $5 billion in crypto inflows over the next 12 months.

How to Interpret This Divergence: Weekly ETF outflows reflect short-term position adjustments by trading-oriented capital, while Citi's price target reflects the medium- to long-term outlook of allocation-driven investors on macroeconomic and regulatory conditions. The two are not necessarily contradictory. Short-term capital is pulling back, while long-term investors are waiting for more favorable entry conditions, such as greater clarity on the interest rate path and the implementation of regulatory frameworks. The key signal to watch is whether sustained ETF outflows push cumulative net flows for 2026 into negative territory, which would indicate a potential trend reversal. Until then, weekly outflows of several hundred million dollars carry limited significance against the backdrop of $56.8 billion in historical cumulative net inflows.

Topic 3: Ethereum's Glamsterdam Upgrade — Hoodi Testnet Activation Confirmed for October 26

Ethereum's Layer 1 scaling roadmap gained a clear timeline milestone this week.

Latest Developments: The Ethereum Foundation confirmed that the Glamsterdam upgrade will activate on the Hoodi testnet on October 26, at epoch 132,352 and slot 4,235,264. This marks the second testnet validation milestone following the successful activation on the Sepolia testnet on October 6.

Key Upgrade Features: EIP-7732 (ePBS) enshrines proposer-builder separation at the protocol level, reducing reliance on third-party relays and extending the effective data propagation window from approximately 2 seconds to 9 seconds. EIP-7928 (BALs) introduces block-level access lists, enabling clients to read state data and validate transactions in parallel. The gas limit on the Hoodi testnet will also be raised to 200 million, matching that of Sepolia.
Impact on ETH: Glamsterdam's testnet activation does not directly affect ETH prices, but it marks a significant step in the validation of Ethereum's Layer 1 scaling roadmap. The mainnet launch date has yet to be confirmed, although December remains a possible window. If testing proceeds smoothly and the upgrade launches on schedule, it could strengthen Ethereum's competitive position in Layer 1 performance. ETH is currently under pressure near $2,400, partly due to consecutive days of ETF net outflows. A technical recovery will likely require both an easing of macroeconomic pressures and further progress on the upgrade.

Data Outlook: The key event this week is the October 27–28 FOMC meeting. Warsh's dovish-leaning remarks at the IMF Annual Meetings have pushed market-implied odds of an October rate hike below 15%, while Goldman Sachs expects the next rate hike to take place in December. Markets will focus on whether the policy statement reinforces expectations of a December rate hike, the dot plot's guidance on the future policy path, and Warsh's comments on the pass-through of energy inflation during the press conference. A hawkish statement could put Bitcoin's $82,500 support level under direct pressure, while dovish language could create an opportunity for a rebound from oversold conditions. In addition, progress on Ethereum's Glamsterdam activation on the Hoodi testnet will be an important milestone in assessing whether ETH's medium-term investment narrative can recover.

VI. Platform Updates

1. MEXC Temporarily Adjusts Maximum Leverage for NFLXUSDT and SPCXUSDT Futures

On October 18, MEXC announced a temporary adjustment to the maximum leverage for NFLXUSDT and SPCXUSDT Futures due to potential market volatility surrounding the Q3 earnings releases of Netflix (NFLX) and SpaceX (SPCX), scheduled for October 21. The adjustment will take effect at 03:00 (UTC+8) on October 21 and remain in place until 06:00 (UTC+8), lasting approximately 180 minutes. The maximum leverage for NFLXUSDT Perpetual Futures will be temporarily reduced from 50x to 20x, while the maximum leverage for SPCXUSDT will be lowered from 200x to 20x. Positions exceeding the new leverage limits can still be closed but cannot be increased. Existing limit orders can be executed normally, but no new limit orders can be placed.

2. MEXC Announces End of Services for Users in Russia and Belarus

On October 19–20, MEXC announced that it would discontinue services for users in Russia and Belarus. Affected customers will receive individual deadlines to close their positions and withdraw their assets. MEXC stated that users who have not received such notifications may continue using the exchange's services, subject to its terms and conditions. The news was first reported by The Defiant and subsequently republished in Chinese by ChainCatcher.

3. MEXC Lists Incentiv (CENT) and Launches Airdrop+ Event

On October 19, MEXC announced a scheduled Spot system upgrade on October 22, from 09:00 to 10:00 (UTC+8), aimed at further improving the user experience. During the upgrade, asset transfers, internal transfers, deposits, and withdrawals may be delayed or fail. Asset inquiries and position list queries may also fail, while modifications to average position prices will be unavailable. Disruptions to the affected services are generally expected to last no more than two minutes. MEXC recommends that users try again after two minutes.
MEXC emphasized that all user assets will remain secure during the upgrade and advised users to manage their positions and open orders in advance to mitigate risks arising from market volatility during the upgrade. The estimated upgrade schedule is for reference only and may be adjusted based on actual progress. If significant market volatility occurs before the upgrade, MEXC may postpone the upgrade and issue a separate announcement.
