3 Paradoxes of Altcoin Season in September

2025/09/18 01:43

Analyses and data indicate that the crypto market is experiencing its most active altcoin season since early 2025, with many altcoins outperforming Bitcoin. However, behind this excitement lies a paradox. Most retail investors remain uneasy as their portfolios show little to no profit.

This article outlines the main reasons behind this situation.

Altcoin Market Cap Rises but Dominance Shrinks

TradingView data shows that the TOTAL3 market cap (excluding BTC and ETH) reached a new high of over $1.1 trillion in September.

Yet the share of OTHERS (excluding the top 10) has declined since 2022, now standing at just 8%.

In past cycles, such as 2017 and 2021, TOTAL3 and OTHERS.D rose together. That trend reflected capital flowing not only into large-cap altcoins but also into mid-cap and low-cap ones.

The current divergence shows that capital is concentrated in stablecoins and a handful of top-10 altcoins such as SOL, XRP, BNB, DOG, HYPE, and LINK. Smaller altcoins receive far less liquidity, making it hard for their prices to return to levels where investors previously bought. This creates a situation where only a few win while most face losses.

Retail investors also tend to diversify across many coins instead of adding size to top altcoins. That explains why many portfolios remain stagnant despite a broader market rally.

Altcoin Index Surges but Investor Sentiment Remains Cautious

The Altcoin Season Index from Blockchain Center now stands at 80 points. This indicates that over 80% of the top 50 altcoins outperformed Bitcoin in the past 90 days—a clear sign of altcoin season.

However, the Fear & Greed Index is at 52, a neutral level reflecting caution and no clear directional bias.

Historical data shows that the 2024 rally drove both indicators higher. At that time, the Altcoin Season Index climbed above 75, while the Fear & Greed Index soared past 80, showing extreme greed. The parallel rise reflected investor confidence as capital rotated strongly into altcoins. But that is not happening now.

Retail caution seems to stem from lessons learned in past cycles, where altcoins spiked then collapsed rapidly due to FOMO and mass sell-offs. New factors such as Fed rate decisions, tax impacts, and geopolitical tensions may also contribute to hesitation.

The Number of Altcoins Has Increased Tenfold Since 2021

Although the TOTAL3 market cap is near its 2021 peak, the context has changed dramatically. CoinMarketCap reports that in 2025, more than 21 million altcoins will be tracked—100 times more than the roughly 20,000 coins in 2021.

Dune data highlights the token explosion from 2017 to 2025, with unique tokens skyrocketing, especially on Ethereum, Solana, and Base.

This creates a much more selective environment. In 2021, investors could profit more easily with fewer coins because competition was lower. With tens of millions of tokens spanning DeFi, meme coins, and AI tokens, picking the right one is as difficult as finding a needle in a haystack.

Most new tokens fail quickly due to low liquidity, rug pulls, or intense competition. Retail investors, who often spread capital across many small-cap tokens, now face higher risks. This results in either losses or very modest returns, even as the overall market surges.

These three factors explain why the September 2025 altcoin season feels incomplete. To overcome this, investors may need deeper research, a focus on fundamentally strong projects, and a reconsideration of excessive diversification.

New Zealand Dollar falls on RBNZ rate cut expectations, US Dollar holds firm

The post New Zealand Dollar falls on RBNZ rate cut expectations, US Dollar holds firm appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) pares early gains against the US Dollar (USD) on Thursday, as near-certain expectations of another interest rate cut by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) keep the Kiwi under sustained pressure. At the time of writing, NZD/USD is trading around 0.5593, easing after a brief, volatile spike to 0.5639 in the immediate reaction to the release of the delayed US labour data. Earlier in the day, markets received the first official US employment data in weeks after delays caused by the government shutdown. The September Nonfarm Payrolls (NFP) rose 119K, strongly beating the 50K forecast, while August was revised down to show a 4K decline instead of the originally reported 22K increase. The Unemployment Rate climbed to 4.4%, slightly above expectations for 4.3%. Additionally, the Labour Force Participation Rate improved slightly to 62.4% from 62.3. Wage growth came in softer than projected, with Average Hourly Earnings rising 0.2% MoM against the 0.3% estimate, while annual wage growth stood at 3.8% YoY, marginally above the 3.7% forecast. Average Weekly Hours held steady at 34.2. The mixed labour data did little to alter expectations around the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) monetary policy outlook. Markets had already been trimming rate-cut bets after a series of cautious comments from Fed officials, who warned that another cut in December could risk reigniting inflation pressures. Some policymakers acknowledged that the labour market is cooling, but stressed that it remains resilient, reinforcing the argument for a careful and measured approach to easing. In New Zealand, markets are awaiting next week’s Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) policy meeting, with another rate cut already fully priced in. Traders widely expect the central bank to deliver another round of easing after October’s surprise 50-basis-point cut, with softening inflation expectations, weak business confidence and subdued…

Shiba Inu Offers 50 ETH Bounty to Recover $4.1M Shibarium

Shiba Inu Offers 50 ETH Bounty to Recover $4.1M Shibarium

The post Shiba Inu Offers 50 ETH Bounty to Recover $4.1M Shibarium appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Shiba Inu has launched a 50 ETH bounty program to recover millions in stolen Shibarium funds. The attacker must return all stolen tokens and submit a detailed whitehat disclosure report to claim the 50 ETH reward. The September 12 exploit drained $4.1 million after the hacker gained control of Shibarium validator keys using 4.6 million BONE. The Shiba Inu ecosystem team has unveiled a 50 ETH ($229,000) bounty program to recover millions in tokens stolen during the September 12 Shibarium bridge exploit.  Partnering with K9 Finance, the team placed the reward in a dedicated escrow contract for the attacker, on the condition that all stolen tokens are returned to a specified recovery wallet. The bounty covers assets including SHIB, ETH, LEASH, xFUND, Treat, FUND, DAI, WBTC, Bad Idea AI, ROAR, USDC, LTD, USDT, Shifu, and OSCAR. KNINE tokens are excluded as K9 Finance has already secured those holdings. Conditions for the Shiba Inu Hacker To claim the bounty, the attacker must not only return the stolen tokens but also provide a full whitehat disclosure report. The document must explain the exploit method, including how validator access was gained, the tools and scripts used, related addresses and transaction hashes, and recommended prevention steps. If the attacker complies and ceases moving the compromised tokens, the Shiba Inu team promises to release the 50 ETH reward and issue a legal waiver where permitted by law. Separately, K9 Finance has offered a 5 ETH bounty for the frozen KNINE tokens worth more than $700,000. Details of the Shibarium Exploit According to the updated investigation, the hacker initiated a flash loan swap to purchase 4.6 million BONE from ShibaSwap. These tokens were delegated to Ryoshi Validator 1, giving the attacker over two-thirds of validator voting power. Using compromised validator keys, they signed a malicious state…
