U.S. PayPal users can now pay at merchants across China using WeChat Pay’s QR-code network. The move connects Tencent’s TenPay Global platform to PayPal World, opening up access to one of the world’s largest mobile payments ecosystems.

The announcement was confirmed by Daniel Hong, vice president at Tencent Financial Technology, via a company social media post on Wednesday.

The service is live for U.S. users now. Tencent said it plans to bring it to PayPal users in other markets in phases, though no specific timeline was given.

To get users on board, Tencent is waiving fees on transactions made with foreign bank cards linked to WeChat Pay. Those waivers run through the end of 2026.

WeChat Pay and Alipay, both owned by Chinese tech giants, together dominate China’s digital payments market. They underpin daily transactions across retail, transport, and services.

For PayPal users visiting China, this removes a major friction point. Previously, navigating payments at local merchants without a Chinese bank account was a real hassle.

What’s Driving the Push

The timing is not random. Tencent is also expanding language support and adding on-the-ground assistance for international users in Shenzhen, specifically in preparation for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in November.

APEC is expected to bring a significant influx of international visitors to China, and having foreign payment methods work smoothly at local merchants is part of the broader welcome mat.

Tencent Financial Technology’s vice president framed this as a step toward deeper international payment integration, not just a one-off event-driven push.

By the Numbers

PYPL stock has been under pressure in 2026 as the company works to rebuild growth momentum. The 0.16% dip on Wednesday was modest and likely not directly tied to the Tencent news.

Tencent’s Hong Kong-listed stock (0700) was also down 1.05% on the day.

The fee waiver incentive through 2026 suggests Tencent is willing to absorb short-term costs to drive adoption among foreign users on the WeChat Pay network.

No financial terms of the TenPay Global and PayPal World integration were disclosed by either company.

The phased expansion to PayPal users outside the U.S. will be watched closely, as it could eventually bring European and other international users into the same network.
