Key highlights:

  • The Stellar network announced a quantum-resistant upgrade expected to be completed by 2027.
  • The upgrade intends to safeguard the ecosystem from future quantum computing threats.
  • Many blockchains, including Ethereum, Solana, and XRP Ledger, have also revealed similar plans.

The Stellar Foundation is preparing for a significant network security upgrade. The blockchain platform has announced plans to make the network quantum-resistant by 2027.

The move comes as part of a broader initiative to fight potential quantum threats. The upgrade intends to protect users from future quantum computing risks, while also ensuring a smooth experience.

Stellar eyes quantum-safe upgrade by 2027

According to the latest reports, the Stellar Foundation is getting ready for a quantum-resistant upgrade. The team released a quantum preparedness plan, outlining a roadmap to migrate the network to quantum-safe cryptography.

The network aims to ensure its safety as the entire blockchain space is preparing to fight the future quantum computing issues. While the quantum-resistant upgrade promises long-term security, it will also preserve existing wallet addresses and transaction history.

As per the announcement, the Stellar quantum-resistant upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. By then, users will be able to secure their accounts with quantum-resistant signers.

Why is this upgrade necessary?

Notably, this quantum-resistant upgrade is necessary to secure the Stellar network from the long-term impact of quantum computing. Most blockchains, including Stellar, rely on cryptographic signatures, which would potentially become vulnerable to quantum computers. The platform stated,

Further, the network revealed two major risks that the platform could face from quantum computers. First, the attackers could possibly make fake validator signatures. This would help them disrupt the network’s consensus process.

Secondly, quantum computers could derive private keys from public keys. Such an action could result in the attackers’ accessing the user accounts. This makes quantum-resistance upgrade a necessity for the network’s security in the future.

Blockchain networks are preparing for the quantum era

It is worth noting that the Stellar network is not the only blockchain platform gearing up for a security upgrade. The whole blockchain space is taking initiatives to counter and stay safe in the future from quantum computers.

In April 2026, crypto payments giant Ripple shared a similar post-quantum readiness plan. The firm stated, “Ripple is introducing a multi-phase roadmap to prepare the XRP Ledger (XRPL) for a post-quantum future, with a target for full readiness by 2028.”

Other major blockchain platforms, including Ethereum and Solana, have also revealed plans for post-quantum security upgrades. While many believe that Bitcoin is already resistant to quantum computing, Coinbase urges the blockchain to prepare for the threat. The firm’s quantum advisory council stated that quantum could affect millions of BTC. The statement read:

As Stellar is transitioning to a security upgrade, Pi Network is also expected to benefit. This is because Pi Network is built on technology derived from Stellar. So, a similar quantum-safe security feature is also estimated to reach the Pi blockchain.
