SEOUL, June 27 — Iraqi goalkeeper Ahmed Basil has unexpectedly become a viral favourite among South Korean netizens, who have flooded social platforms with praise for his looks, composure and sportsmanship during the ongoing World Cup.

The surge of attention began after posts on Korean community forums highlighted clips and photos of the 29‑year‑old Al‑Shorta goalkeeper, with users on TheQoo and Pannchoa sharing screenshots calling him “handsome”, “cool” and “the real main character of the match.”

Much of the fascination centres on Basil’s calm presence between the posts despite Iraq’s difficult group‑stage campaign. South Korean commenters noted his sharp features, expressive eyes and “movie‑actor aura,” with some joking that they were now “supporting Iraq because of him.” Others praised his professionalism and resilience, pointing out that he continued to perform under pressure even as Iraq faced heavy defeats.

Basil, who plays for Iraqi champions Al‑Shorta, entered the World Cup with significant experience, including appearances in the AFC Champions League and multiple seasons as his club’s first‑choice keeper. His international record shows steady involvement with Iraq’s senior squad since 2022, reinforcing the impression among Korean fans that he is “more than just a pretty face.”

The online reaction has also taken on a light‑hearted tone, with Korean users creating memes, edits and affectionate nicknames. Some joked that they had “converted to Iraq FC,” while others said they were watching Iraq’s matches solely to see Basil on screen. The trend mirrors a familiar pattern in Korean online culture, where unexpected foreign athletes occasionally become breakout favourites during major tournaments.

While Basil has not publicly responded to the sudden wave of attention, the viral moment has introduced him to a new international fanbase — one that appears eager to follow his next appearance, regardless of Iraq’s results on the pitch.
