Five men arrested after violent Melaka clash leaves two victims seriously injured near temple

MELAKA, July 6 — Police arrested five men to assist in the investigation into a rioting incident that left two men seriously injured at Jalan Pengkalan, Kampung Pengkalan Rama Pantai, early yesterday morning.

Acting Melaka Tengah police chief Supt Halim Abas said they received a report via the MERS 999 emergency hotline at 1.48am regarding a fight involving a group of men at the location.

“Preliminary investigations found that the incident occurred at about 1am when two men, aged 41 and 46, who were travelling on a motorcycle, stopped near a temple to retrieve another motorcycle that had been left there.

“While at the location, the two victims were allegedly attacked by a group of men using plastic chairs, motorcycle helmets and a wooden stick, resulting in injuries,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He added that one victim sustained lacerations to his forehead and chin, while the other suffered serious injuries, including a fractured skull and both were taken to Melaka Hospital for further treatment, with one of them admitted to the hospital’s Red Zone due to the severity of his injuries.

Police arrested five men aged between 23 and 34 later the same day to assist in the investigation under Section 326 and Section 148 of the Penal Code.

“Initial checks found that two of the suspects have previous criminal records, while the remaining three have no prior criminal record. All five suspects have been remanded for six days, from today until July 10, to facilitate investigations,” he said.

The victims did not know the group of suspects and that the motive behind the attack is still under investigation, Halim said, adding that the police were completing the investigation by recording statements from witnesses, obtaining the victims’ full medical reports, and carrying out further inquiries to determine the actual cause of the incident. — Bernama
