Coinbase Acquires The Clearing Company to Expand Prediction Markets

2 min read

Coinbase has agreed to acquire The Clearing Company, signaling a deeper move into event-based financial products. The deal supports Coinbase’s broader goal of becoming an “everything exchange” that blends crypto, derivatives, equities, and real-world outcome trading. Consequently, the acquisition strengthens Coinbase’s position as competition intensifies across digital finance platforms.

The agreement follows Coinbase’s recent rollout of prediction markets, which allow users to trade outcomes tied to elections, economic data, and sports. These markets operate within the same interface as other Coinbase products.

Hence, the company aims to increase engagement by offering trading formats beyond traditional spot assets. The transaction remains subject to standard closing conditions and should close in January.

Startup Talent Joins Coinbase Platform

The Clearing Company launched earlier this year under founder Toni Gemayel, who previously worked in growth roles across the sector. The startup raised $15 million in seed funding during August, with participation from Coinbase Ventures. Additionally, the firm focused on building a regulated, onchain prediction markets infrastructure.

Following the acquisition, nearly the entire Clearing Company team will join Coinbase. The startup employed around ten people, and their expertise will help scale Coinbase’s prediction markets offering.

Significantly, Coinbase confirmed that the deal involves a mix of cash and company stock. However, the company described the transaction value as immaterial.

Coinbase expects the incoming team to accelerate product development and support broader distribution. The move reflects a strategy centered on acquiring specialized talent rather than standalone platforms. Moreover, Coinbase continues to integrate niche capabilities into its core ecosystem instead of operating separate brands.

Prediction Markets Gain Industry Momentum

Coinbase launched its prediction markets through a regulated venue and sourced initial liquidity from Kalshi. The company plans to add more platforms and market types over time. Besides, the expansion aligns with growing interest in onchain financial instruments tied to real-world events.

Across the sector, prediction markets have seen sharp growth. Polymarket and Kalshi recorded record activity last month. Combined trading volumes reached roughly $8 billion during November. Consequently, exchanges and fintech firms now view prediction markets as a high-engagement growth channel.

This deal marks Coinbase’s tenth acquisition announcement in 2025. Earlier purchases included Roam, Spindl, Iron Fish, Deribit, and Opyn Markets. Additionally, Coinbase acquired Liquifi, Sensible, Echo, and Vector.fun this year. The steady pace highlights a strategy focused on building a diversified financial marketplace under one platform.

Courtesy of Patrick Brown/FX The following contains certain spoilers for Alien: Earth! When it came time to marry picture and music for FX’s Alien: Earth, series creator Noah Hawley did what he’s done for close to 20 years: call up Jeff Russo. “[He] said, ‘I’m adapting the Alien IP, for television. What do you think, musically?’” Russo recalls over Zoom. “We started talking and I began writing music for it. It seemed like…not a foregone conclusion, but a conversation that was being had.” A founder of Tonic and a previous member of Low Stars, the composer has scored all of Hawley’s film and television projects since The Unusuals (2009). “Everything I’ve learned about making music for storytelling, I learned by doing with him,” Russo adds. “He really knows what he wants. And when you have a confident filmmaker that is also open to artistic collaboration, it’s the best of all the worlds.” The first small screen translation of the nearly 50-year-old franchise known for straddling horror, sci-fi, and action genres, Alien: Earth takes place two years before the events of the 1979 original and nearly six decades before Aliens. “We talk a lot about trying to figure out what the underlying property is making our audience feel,” Russo explains. “Trying to create a unique narrative and way of telling the story, but at the same time, making the audience feel that same feeling. In this case, there’s that feeling of dread. There’s that tense, eerie feeling created with such a deft hand in Alien. And then [came Aliens, which was] such a great action piece. So how are we going to take those two ideas and sort of mix them together, have that be something unique and different, while eliciting the…
