PANews reported on February 13th, citing the Financial Times, that Trump plans to reduce tariffs on some steel and aluminum products as he faces an "affordability crisis" that has weakened his approval ratings ahead of the November midterm elections. Last summer, the US president imposed tariffs of up to 50% on steel and aluminum products and expanded these tariffs to include various metal products, including washing machines and ovens. However, according to three sources familiar with the matter, the Trump administration is reviewing the list of products affected by the tariffs and plans to exempt some goods, halt the expansion of the tariff list, and instead launch more targeted national security investigations on specific products. The sources said that trade officials at the US Department of Commerce and the Office of the US Trade Representative believe that these tariffs are harming consumers by increasing the prices of goods such as pie platters, food cans, and beverage cans. The sources also said that countries including the UK, Mexico, Canada, and EU member states could benefit from the easing of US tariffs on steel and aluminum products.
