Upon graduating from Stanford University with an engineering degree, Fisher began his career as a fellow for Venture for America, the former organization from Andrew Yang that connected young entrepreneurs to startups around the country. “It wasn’t just about entrepreneurship, but social impact, thinking bigger,” Fisher says. He ended up launching his own e-commerce startup, but despite enjoying the lifestyle that a young startup provided, the work itself, Fisher bluntly explains, “was so boring.”

He balanced that boredom by purchasing gummy worm molds and experimenting with his childlike infatuation. “My older brother was always eating candy, so I definitely picked up that habit from him,” he says. “One of my favorite products was Trolli eggs, the little gummy balls coated in a candy shell.”

Part of having fun with candy, to Fisher, means resisting the modern day branding of healthier foods. “I don’t want it to be called ‘smart’ or ‘healthy,’” he says. “They weren’t just taking the sugar out, they were also taking the fun experience out.” He built a brand that screams anything but ‘healthy,’ despite the product itself having a significantly stronger macronutrient profile than its legacy competitors. “If we’re screaming something healthy and it’s candy, no one is going to be attracted to it,” he says.

Fisher hired a cartoonist with Adult Swim credits on his resume to help him build out the entire Rotten lore, which goes well beyond a logo and packaging design. “We’re building a cartoon universe,” he says. “Brands need to be media companies…you need to entertain.”

That leads to Dr. Rotten–the whackadoodle scientist working all day long in his laboratory, behind everything Rotten. He’s the one always communicating with his Freaks, the forgotten species he recently discovered, lying dormant because they all were eating too much sugar. “The Freaks are uninhibited, goofy, wacky and a little mischievous,” Fisher says. ”They’re up to no good.”

Those Freaks are the customers who create the Rotten fandom themselves. “Everyone has their own personal freak lying dormant inside of them,” Fisher continues about the fiction world he developed. “Rotten is the formula Dr. Rotten developed as the key to help you unleash your freak.”

And the misfit Frankie Freak is not to be forgotten either, with his slimy green skin, bulging eyeballs and an electrifying purple tongue permanently hanging out of his mouth, greeting every freaky customer who picks up a bag of Rotten, welcoming them into the lore.

The universe created sets up the opportunity for an entire media company where Rotten can begin to license characters. The gummies may be the focal point of the brand today, but they may soon just be one element of a larger franchise.

Just as he followed what felt an authentic calling for him, Fisher now encourages every customer, wherever they may lie on the freak scale, to do the same, inspiring Rotten’s tagline, ‘Feed Your Freak.’ “It’s a call to action…” he says, “… to let your freak out and live your truest self.”

Subdued Sweetness

Rotten wouldn’t be the counterintuitive brand that draws you in from the shelf unless the candy itself were made with ingredients that are far from rotten.

In terms of sweeteners, Rotten products do not contain any high fructose corn syrup and are all at least a 60% reduction in sugar compared to its legacy competitors. Sweeteners in Rotten are low calorie, naturally occurring ingredients like allulose, chicory root fiber and monk fruit.

Fisher became a mad scientist himself while researching and formulating the product with all sorts of sweetening agents. “When you’re pulling sugar out of a gummy, you have to replace it with something,” he explains. “One thing that works well which also tastes sweet is fiber.” That’s what led him to adding chicory root fiber as both an additional sweetener and for added fiber. Extra probiotic fibers also help each bag of Rotten hit 7g of fiber.

Completely eliminating all sugar was not the direction he felt would compel shoppers to pick up a bag, as it would risk being perceived as a diet product. “Other modern zero sugar candies are all maltitol-based, he says. “The texture and flavor felt off and everyone was having stomach aches.”

Unlike other gummy brands too, Rotten uses no artificial dyes. Fisher initially dehydrated fruits himself and pulverized them into powdered dyes when working on original formulations. Today, dyes are made out of turmeric, spirulina, sweet potato and carrot. Still, Rotten gummies taste nothing like a ‘healthier’ candy–just candy.

Rotten first rolled out gummy worms and sour gummy worms as they’re the most popular type of gummy, paired with what’s otherwise an unfamiliar brand. “Then we started seeing multi-texture candy exploding,” Fisher says. “People want something novel and exciting for their senses.”

The result of the new sensory experiment is Rotten Cruncheez, the gummy ring coated in hard crunchy candy bits, the sour variety of which has become the brand’s best-seller. Rotten plans to introduce new experimental flavors and formats soon.

Rotten gummies just launched at 7-Eleven stores in Southern California

Up until 2025, Rotten’s sales were mostly online. But once it hit its first retailer, Chicago’s Foxtrot, the momentum never stopped. The nearly 6,000 nationwide shelves span the total spectrum from convenience stores to natural grocers.

At 7-Eleven, Rotten has become a finalist in its 2025 Brands With Heart emerging brands program. “Rotten stood out to us immediately as an innovative player in the gummy candy space,” Louisa McCarty, Manager of 7-Ventures and 7-Eleven Emerging Brands, tells me. “The brand is tapping into the better-for-you trend with a lower sugar option while also leaning into formats like Cruncheez that we’ve seen experience explosive growth. We also love the brand’s personality and feel confident it will pop on the shelf.”

One of Rotten’s major retail partners is the Giant Company, which carries the products in 120 of its enterprise stores on the East Coast. Bobby Hough, Giant’s candy category manager tells me that in just a few months since entering the stores, Rotten has captured a substantial portion of category sales. “The key to selling candy is knowing what the innovative and trendy items are going to be and making the customer want to stop and pick up your product,” Hough says. “From the color and fonts of the packaging to the unique assertive language, I knew this was going to be a hit.”

Giant has seen a double-digit increase year-over-year in better-for-you non-chocolate candy sales. National data echoes the same sentiment. Better-for-you candy overall grew more than 15% in the past year, according to new SPINS data. It also shows the non-chocolate candy category sits at $12.5 billion, a nearly 4% year-over-year increase, of which gummy candy specifically controls about a quarter.

“While we’ve been selling healthier candy options for many years, Rotten has already stood out on our shelves with its design, strong social media and marketing presence, along with its flavor profile,” Hough says. “Customers are looking for something that makes them feel better about having candy as a snack for themselves and their family but still satisfies their cravings for something sweet.”

Rotten has entered some non-traditional food retail locations, like Zumiez and Old Navy, places where young people and families who don’t necessarily shop at grocery stores may easily grab the eye-popping package, curious to see what the heck is inside. Its expansion also spans retail partners like Costco’s Northeast region, Walmart’s California stores and Sprouts nationwide. The retail opportunities are endless for such a product–anywhere that sells candy, essentially, every cash register in the country. And it’s curious to think of the possibility of getting in doors at institutions like Dylan’s Candy Bar or a future acquisition by Hershey or Mars. Fisher is set to prepare for a new round of fundraising to help support the rapid growth.

There’s no doubt that it’s possible one day, not too far from now, candy products like Rotten won’t be known as ‘healthy candy,’ but just the norm for a simple treat, with Rotten as one of the pioneers to make the change actually catapult into our evolving culture.

Financial services holding company Nomura Holdings is preparing to expand into Japan’s cryptocurrency market through its Switzerland-based subsidiary, Laser Digital Holdings. A Laser Digital spokesperson confirmed Friday that the unit is in pre-consultation talks with Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) and intends to apply for a license to offer crypto trading services to institutional investors in the country.  However, the spokesperson told Cointelegraph that the application date remains “undetermined,” and will depend on the outcome of the discussions with the FSA.  If approved, Laser Digital would launch broker-dealer services for traditional financial and crypto-focused companies, including exchanges in Japan. Nomura is part of the Nomura Group, Japan’s largest investment bank and brokerage group. Japanese institutions plan to invest in crypto The move follows a broader push by institutions into the Japanese crypto market. Earlier this week, Daiwa Securities Group, one of Japan’s largest brokerages, introduced a crypto lending service that allows clients to borrow Japanese yen using Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) as collateral.  Laser Digital and Daiwa’s push into the Japanese market seems to be a response to growing demand for crypto investments in the region.  In June, Nomura and Laser Digital unveiled the results of a survey exploring institutional appetite for crypto.
