Hoskinson Says This QR Code Could Onboard a Billion People to Crypto

Charles Hoskinson demos Midnight Passport, a seven-layer crypto onboarding tool that gets new users a full wallet via QR code in under 60 seconds.

Charles Hoskinson wants to bring a billion people into crypto. Not someday. Through a QR code, in under a minute. That is the pitch behind Midnight Passport, a product he revealed during a live CoinDesk interview demo this week.

Speaking on X under his account @IOHK_Charles, Hoskinson called Midnight Passport one of his favorite features he has ever worked on. He said it will be a key tool for mass adoption. No qualifiers attached.

The Stack Nobody Talks About

The system runs on seven distinct layers. Hoskinson walked through each one during the demo, pulling from a markdown document he said he wrote over a weekend. About a hundred pages. The document drew from multiple sources, including the Open Wallet Foundation, DREC, Near Protocol, ZKME, and Ethereum Naming Service work done alongside Hedera Hashgraph and Algorand.

The architecture covers wallet abstraction at the base, then trusted execution environments, encryption keychains, an account model, dApp runtime, and chain abstraction sitting above. Each layer is visible in ASCII diagram form in the spec. Hoskinson turned that into a navigable website to make it legible for non-engineers.

The flow itself is direct. A new user scans a QR code. Within 60 seconds they have a fully functional wallet, name service, and multi-chain access with tokens ready to go.

As Hoskinson said on X: the goal was to design something where “they don’t even know they’re in the industry.”

No Seed Phrases. One Key. Done.

The security model strips out the friction that has kept most people away. Keys never leave the hardware. One key per device. Seed phrases are gone entirely. Everything gets encrypted before it leaves the device.

Hoskinson tied this directly to the post-quantum research IOG has been publishing since at least 2019, referencing a paper called “The Bitcoin Backbone Protocol Against Quantum Adversaries.” The research group, he said, works in decades. Midnight Passport is where that research hits the real world.

Recovery is also built in. Lose the phone, recover the wallet. No permanent loss tied to a single piece of hardware.

Multi-Chain Was the Point From the Start

Midnight Passport is not being built around Cardano alone. Hoskinson was plain about it. The easiest way to set up a Bitcoin wallet or an Ethereum wallet, he argued, will eventually run through this kind of flow.

Installing Ethereum dApps. Same thing. The passport moves from app to app, ecosystem to ecosystem, and the user never has to manage what’s underneath.

The spec also includes defined user personas. One for someone who has never touched crypto. One for a daily power user. Each has a stated success definition. The casual user’s benchmark is the 60-second QR setup. The power user benchmark goes further into dApp access and multi-chain management.

Hoskinson has long framed Midnight as the infrastructure layer that handles what public blockchains cannot. Identity. Selective disclosure. Compliance without exposure. Midnight Passport is the consumer-facing surface of all that.

The specification now feeds directly into a formal Midnight Improvement Proposal. Implementation follows from there.
