MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines is perennially vulnerable in terms of food security, and the war in the Middle East is exacerbating the situation. The country is a net food importer, and it is suffering from disruptions in the supply chains of food and energy resources. Local production has taken a hit, too.

A looming severe bout of El Niño threatens to worsen the situation in the coming months.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has long worked with the Philippine government in both normal and difficult times. Its Philippine representative and director Regis Chapman speaks with Rappler editor-at-large Marites Vitug about the agency’s latest study on the country’s situation.
