MANILA, Philippines – Super Typhoon Bavi is projected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) either on Tuesday evening, July 7, or early Wednesday morning, July 8.

As of 10 am on Monday, July 6, Bavi was located 2,215 kilometers east of southeastern Luzon, near the Northern Mariana Islands, where it made landfall.

The super typhoon is moving west northwest toward PAR at 20 kilometers per hour (km/h). Once it enters PAR, it will be given the local name Inday.

It currently has maximum sustained winds of 205 km/h and gustiness of up to 250 km/h.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the chances of landfall in the country remain slim, as Bavi may head for Taiwan and Japan’s Ryukyu Islands. Taiwan is within PAR.

However, given Bavi’s intensity and size, it will still affect parts of the Philippines.

PAGASA expects to raise tropical cyclone wind signals for the northern and eastern portions of Northern Luzon, possibly beginning Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.

“Due to the uncertainty in terms of radius of strong winds, the possibility of raising wind signals over the eastern portions of Southern Luzon and Visayas is not ruled out,” added the weather bureau.

The highest possible tropical cyclone wind signal could be Signal No. 2 or 3.

PAGASA also said gusty conditions are likely to be experienced in most parts of the country starting Tuesday or Wednesday due to the southwest monsoon or habagat, which will be enhanced by the super typhoon.

As for rainfall, Bavi and the enhanced southwest monsoon will trigger heavy rain in the northern and western portions of the country. Specific provinces or regions to be affected are expected to be announced through a separate weather advisory soon.

In addition, PAGASA plans to issue a gale warning by Wednesday as it predicts rough to very rough sea conditions in the northern and eastern seaboards of the Philippines.

Bavi or the future Inday would be the country’s ninth tropical cyclone for 2026, and the second for July. The weather bureau earlier said two to four tropical cyclones may form within or enter PAR during the month. – Rappler.com
