Over 800,000 CPR Compressions Practiced at FIFA Fan Events in Landmark Public Health Campaign

The American Heart Association reported that attendees at FIFA World Cup fan events in four U.S. host cities have performed more than 800,000 chest compressions during Hands-Only CPR training sessions, marking one of the largest public CPR education efforts in the organization’s history. The initiative, a collaboration with FIFA, targets the critical gap in bystander response to cardiac arrest, where immediate CPR can double or triple survival rates.

More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside hospitals in the United States each year, yet many bystanders hesitate to act due to lack of training. The American Heart Association’s Mobile CPR Unit has trained over 8,000 attendees across Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, and New York, teaching the two simple steps: call 911 and push hard and fast in the center of the chest. This effort is part of the Nation of Lifesavers movement, which aims to double cardiac arrest survival rates by 2030.

“More than 800,000 CPR training compressions practiced by fans are proof of how quickly people can build the confidence to act when every second counts,” said Nancy Brown, chief executive officer of the American Heart Association. “Still, more than half of people who have a cardiac arrest outside a hospital do not receive CPR before professional help arrives. By bringing Hands-Only CPR training to FIFA Fan events, we’re helping more people feel ready to act – and the life they save is likely to be someone they love.”

The training takes place at FIFA Fan Experiences, where attendees learn to recognize cardiac arrest and respond. With nearly three out of four cardiac arrests occurring at home, the skills learned could be life-saving for loved ones. The American Heart Association is the worldwide leader in resuscitation science and publishes the official scientific guidelines for CPR.

The campaign represents the largest public Hands-Only CPR engagement in the Mobile CPR Unit’s history.
