PETALING JAYA: Hospital drama “The Pitt” and comedy favourite “Hacks” emerged the biggest winners when the nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced yesterday, leading a year filled with record-breaking achievements, surprise snubs and streaming milestones.

“The Pitt” topped all shows with 25 nominations, while fellow HBO Max series “Hacks” followed closely with 24, setting a new record for the most Emmy nominations ever received by a comedy series in a single year.

It surpassed the previous high of 23 shared by “The Studio” last year and “The Bear” in 2024.

The strong showing helped HBO Max dominate the nominations once again. Combined, HBO and Max originals amassed 122 nominations, comfortably ahead of Netflix’s 111 and Apple TV+’s record-setting 89.

More than two-fifths of HBO Max’s haul came from just “The Pitt” and “Hacks”.

Among the biggest success stories for Apple TV+ were freshman horror-comedy series “Widow’s Bay” and “Pluribus”, which collected 19 and 18 nominations respectively, highlighting the streamer’s growing awards pedigree.

The nods also underlined television’s increasingly competitive landscape, with first-year series such as “Spider-Noir”, “DTF St Louis”, “The Beast in Me”, “Black Rabbit” and “All Her Fault” making an immediate impact.

Several long-running favourites enjoyed memorable final bows. “Hacks” not only rewrote the comedy record books, but also eclipsed “Schitt’s Creek” as the most-nominated comedy in its final season.

Meanwhile, “Euphoria”, “Stranger Things” and “The Boys” also picked up multiple nominations as they approached the end of their respective runs.

Additionally, this year’s nominations produced an impressive collection of multi-hyphenate contenders. Jason Bateman led all performers with four nods spanning acting, directing and producing across two series, while Noah Wyle earned three nominations for starring in, directing and producing “The Pitt”.

Actors Matthew Rhys, Quinta Brunson, Martin Short and Jason Segel were also recognised in multiple categories.

Some 28 performers received their first Emmy nominations, including several members of “The Pitt” ensemble, Charles Melton and Carey Mulligan for “Beef”, Megan Stalter for “Hacks”, and veteran South Korean actress Youn Yuh-jung.

As always, the nominations sparked debate over notable omissions. Fans lamented the absence of acclaimed finance drama “Industry”, while previous Emmy winners Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach of “The Bear” were both left out of this year’s acting races.

The winners will be announced at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept 14. Actress Mariska Hargitay will host the ceremony.
