Ethereum news is drawing attention to the launch of Ethlabs, a new nonprofit research and development organization created by five former Ethereum Foundation researchers.

Backed by Bitmine Immersion Technologies, SharpLink, Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin, Anchorage, Octant, and SNZ, the organization enters the network with a focus on Ethereum’s core infrastructure.

Ethlabs said it will operate independently, with its leadership setting research priorities and funders playing no role in directing its technical roadmap. The launch brings together researchers who helped shape several of Ethereum’s upgrades and places their work under a new long-term institutional structure.

The formation of Ethlabs comes as activity on Ethereum continues to expand across several sectors. Stablecoins, tokenized real-world assets, investment funds, and AI-driven commerce are increasingly moving onchain.

Against that backdrop, the founders said the network must continue evolving to handle growing demand while upholding its existing security and operational standards.

The team behind Ethlabs includes Ansgar Dietrichs, Barnabé Monnot, Caspar Schwarz-Schilling, Josh Rudolf, and Julian Ma. Before launching the organization, all five held senior research positions within the Ethereum Foundation.

Over the years, the researchers contributed to areas including finality, protocol economics, scaling, data availability, and virtual machine development. Those efforts played a role in several Ethereum upgrades.

Now, through Ethlabs, that work moves into an independent nonprofit structure designed to provide dedicated support for long-term research and development.

According to the announcement, the organization will operate independently of both its funders and the Ethereum Foundation. Research decisions will be made internally by the Ethlabs leadership team.

Ethlabs Sets Sights on Long-Term Ethereum Protocol Development

With the organization now established, its initial work will focus on several areas of Ethereum development. These include settlement efficiency, scalability, cross-chain interoperability, data availability, and protocol economics.

Ethlabs said those priorities align with the growing demands being placed on blockchain networks. As more financial and commercial activity moves on-chain, the group plans to study ways to improve settlement speed, strengthen interoperability between networks, and support infrastructure capable of handling larger transaction volumes.

The organization also identified native issuance, cross-chain asset movement, and mainnet capacity as areas that require continued research. In addition, it plans to conduct research on ETH’s monetary properties as part of its broader protocol research agenda.

The announcement on Ethereum news described Ethlabs as part of a broader evolution within the Ethereum ecosystem. While the Ethereum Foundation continues to focus on its core responsibilities, independent organizations are increasingly contributing to network development through specialized research and technical initiatives.

Supporters of Ethlabs pointed to that model as the reason for creating a separate institution specialized in protocol research. Bitmine Chairman Thomas Lee, SharpLink Chief Executive Officer Joseph Chalom, and Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin each described the need for continued investment in research as Ethereum expands into new use cases.
