Tokenomi Injective (INJ)

The Injective (INJ) token serves as the native utility and governance asset for the Injective ecosystem, a Layer-1 blockchain optimized for decentralized finance. Originally launched as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum in October 2020, the protocol has since migrated to its own native chain, implementing a dynamic model that balances inflationary rewards with a unique deflationary burn mechanism.

Issuance Mechanism

Injective utilizes a dynamic issuance model where the total supply is influenced by both minting (inflation) and burning (deflation). The initial total supply was set at 100,000,000 INJ.

• Inflationary Minting: New tokens are minted to reward validators and stakers for securing the network. At genesis, the inflation rate was set at 7%. This rate is designed to fluctuate between a floor of 5% and a ceiling of 10%, adjusting based on the staking ratio. The target staking rate for the network is 85%.
• Deflationary Burning: Injective employs a "Buy Back and Burn" auction. Originally, 60% of all fees collected from exchange dApps were auctioned off weekly for INJ, which was then burned. With the INJ 2.0 upgrade, this was expanded to allow any dApp on the network to contribute up to 100% of their fees to the burn auction, increasing the scarcity of the token. To date, millions of INJ have been permanently removed from circulation through this process.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial distribution of the 100 million INJ supply was divided among several key stakeholders and ecosystem initiatives to ensure long-term growth and decentralization.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The INJ token is deeply integrated into the protocol's functionality, providing multiple layers of utility:

• Protocol Governance: INJ holders can propose and vote on protocol changes, including market listings and software upgrades. A deposit of 500 INJ is required to initiate a proposal.
• Staking and Security: As a Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) network, users stake INJ to secure the chain. Validators (capped at 60 active nodes) and their delegators earn inflationary rewards and a portion of transaction fees.
• Gas Fees: Native INJ is used to pay for transaction gas fees on the network.
• Exchange Incentives:
  • Trade & Earn: A program that distributes INJ rewards to users based on their trading volume. Following IIP-93, users must stake INJ to earn rewards beyond a certain threshold.
  • Open Liquidity Program (OLP): Incentivizes market makers to provide liquidity to the on-chain order book.
• Collateral and Medium of Exchange: INJ can be used as margin or collateral for derivative markets and as a currency within ecosystem dApps (e.g., buying NFTs).
• Fee Discounts: Staking INJ allows traders to reach higher VIP tiers, reducing their trading fees on exchange dApps like Helix.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

Injective implements specific locking periods to ensure network stability and align long-term incentives:

• Staking Unbonding Period: Tokenholders who delegate their INJ to a validator must undergo a 21-day unbonding period when they choose to unstake. During this time, the tokens do not earn rewards and cannot be traded.
• Vesting and Unlocks: Initial allocations for the team and advisors were subject to vesting schedules. Historical data shows significant unlock events occurred periodically, with the final team and advisor allocations scheduled to fully vest by January 2024.
